Cold Harbor, Virginia

These two trench lines were dug by the Army of Northern Virginia in 1864.  Grant will order an attack that he will say later that he wished he had not done.  One yank predicted his death when he wrote "I was killed at Cold Harbor."  They will find it on his body.

ColdHarbor 2

Most of the trees were not there in 1864, and the yankee lines are about where the treeline becomes solid in the distance of the first picture.   As you can see the lines went on for miles.   The attack was over as fast as if started.  Appox. 15 minutes, with appox. 15,000 casulities on the yankees side.
