Myths

                       ON  SLAVERY

Today, because of Hollywood, we think of a runaway slave being chased down by a group of men and a pack of dogs.  Dogs were used in some places in the northern part of the South.  But the average slave owner didn't have a pack of dogs for chasing after run away slaves.

Ending slavery may have been one of the North's reason for fighting the war but it wasn't the South's reason.  Why would anyone think that 12% of the total Southern Population be the only part of the south who had a reason to fight the war.  Jeff Davis's farewell speech to the Senate in 1860 does not mention slavery at all!

Most slave chasers lived in the upper south and in the North.  Oberland, Ohio, who claims to have started the war because of it anti-slave stand, had its share of slave catchers.  The law enforcement parts of northern towns and cities, were happy to find run aways because it was like finding a box of money owned by drug lords.  They could then get the reward offered.  Remember $5 then is about $1,100 today.

                Generals

The belief that the South had the best generals at the start of the war is not true.  Lee didn't get command until Spring of 1862.  Sherman was in command of troops at Bull Run, Manassas. Grant was in command as the Yankees moved south in the winter of 1861 in Tennessee

             THE TASK SYSTEM.

The task system was a work system were the slave had a job to do for the day.  Once that job was done the work for the slave was over for the day.  Many slaves went home and worked a small plot of land of the masters holdings and then sold the extra food to the "big house."  Enough money was raised that slaves have bought slaves to replaced themselves.  Many just bought things they wanted.  On Sunday, Slaves going to church would look down on other slaves who were walking to church, because they were to lazy to work hard enough to have a horse.
The task system (in rice production area of the South) was so well liked by the slaves, that after the war, they were mad at the Yankees for making them work when they felt they didn't need to.

Rating of the Generals of the war isn't really an easy thing to do.  Some say Grant was the best because he won.  Yet he had all the weapons, supplies, and men he needed.  If Lee had them the out come would have been different.  Grant and Lee with the same size armies and supplies being equal is something that most people in the south would have liked to have seen.  Grant didn't show much great military strategy at Vicksburg.  It took 4 times to get it right.  Lee showed at Second Manassas/Bull Run, Fredricksburg, and other battles that he was indeed a general of great ability.

MORE ON SLAVERY

African Slavery was what brought slaves to the new world.  Europe had, for the most part, gotten rid of the slave.  There was indentured slavery.  But that was for the time to pay off the debt.  When Europeans bumped into slaves in Africa they were just another barter item for manufactured goods.

Cannons

Battlefield artillery was not always what it seemed to be.  First the guns were not the killers they would become in the World Wars, but they were able to hit their target.  At an artillery shoot at Ft. Hood, a 10lb Parrot shot as well as a modern 105!

The 1st. slave revolt was in the islands south of Cuba and was successful for a while.  The two Africans who lead the revolt, didn't get rid of slavery!  They kept it because they were African Princes who were slave masters themselves.  I don't remember if it was a Dutch Island or French, but I think it was the Spanish who put down the revolt.

The Yankees always had enough artillery.  They were used as sniper weapons at Petersburg.  But just because they were light artillery didn't mean anything.  The 20th Penn. Lt. Artillery had 20lb Parrots. To shorten his trains Grant remove 2 cannon from each battery during the Wilderness to Petersburg fighting.

According to the census of 1860, of the full time residents in Charleston, SC, who owned slaves, 60% were Black females!

Many people have said that Lincoln won because the Demo. Party was split 3 ways.  But when you look at the results you find that Lincoln did not need the votes of anyone other then the 38% of the vote that he got.  That gave him 56% of the electorial college.

Jim Crow laws when into effect during the reconstruction time in the South.   The majority of the south had no political power.  The North controlled what went on in the South.  So the people to blame for Jim Crow is not the South, but the North

In my view the best generals of the war are, for the South, Lee, Jackson, Cleburne, and Forrest, for the North, Grant, Sherman, and Thomas.  All the rest are want to be's.  There is no top ten and were these guys rate on the list is depending on how their day is going, except for Lee.

WAR

The view of the poor Confederate soldier as being half starved and without proper clothing is only part true.  As the south fell back it fell back on it supply lines.  Therefore uniforms were always issued once a year, and food was plenty in the early summer.  It was during the winter that corn meal and salt pork was the main dish.  Uniforms also had the nasty habit of falling apart for both sides.  So you would have some in almost full Yankee uniform.   Leather goods is what the south was short of,.and they did get some help from some of the Yankee Generals who were less effective then their Southern counter-part.  So Yankee leather goods were always on demand.

Our Civil War wasn't a civil war!  A civil war is were two groups fight for control of one government.  White Russians vs. Red Russians in the Russian Civil War after the 1916 revolt.  Republicans vs. Franco fighting in Spain is a Civil War.  They are fighting for control of Madrid.  The South wasn't wanting control of Washington, D. C. or the North.

POW CAMPS WERE NOT FUN FOR EITHER SIDE.  IF YOU CHECK OUT THE INDEX ON THE TIME-LIFE SERIES, YOU WILL FIND TWO NUMBERS OF THOSE WHO DIED IN CAPTIVITY.  IT BOILS DOWN THAT ABOUT 15% OF ALL YANKEES   DIED IN REBEL HANDS, BUT 12%-13% OF ALL REBELS DIED IN YANKEE HANDS.  THE NORTH WAS SUPPOSE TO HAVE ALL THE FOOD, BLANKETS AND STUFF FOR EVERYONE.  WHAT WENT WRONG?

I know that I have spent a great deal of timeon slavery but since that is what most people believe that the war was fough over.  Then I have to answer some of those questions that people have.  You end up reading about the abolition movement, and find that it was mainly in the South up until 1830 and then moved North.  After that the people who had less dealings and more bigoted feelings against the blacks, gave the movement support.  But that was still a very small number.  Less then a 50 thousand in a 1860 population of 22 mill.

Similar to this replica watches uk table we are not seen replica watches, the auction did not say a lot but not many, then what is rolex replica the charm of this watch so that collectors are fake replica watches sought after?

Many people in the North first joined out of a sense of adventure and for no political following.  Some did, but they were not the average.  Those who join for political ideas came after Bull Run when it was brought home that the North needed its men.  The South was just as messed up when it was believe that war was noble.  After Shiloh, the lines for enlistment in both the North and South became very short.  The North had a round about draft starting in 1862, and the South went to a direct draft in the same year.  The North went to a national (direct) draft in 1863

You also, read about slavery and study it, and find that it isn't always a bad thing.  Except that slavery is slavery.  But the Blacks in Africa are as much to blame for it as anyone else is.  Today you can still buy a slave for $80.00 in parts of Africa.White men are not the slave chatchers that are in the movies.  Most of those people were Arab, or Black.
